Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, this gritty drama portrays life in the weeks and months following a zombie apocalypse. Led by police officer Rick Grimes, his family and a group of other survivors find themselves constantly on the move in search of a safe and secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and Rick discovers that the overwhelming fear of the survivors can be more deadly than the zombies walking among them.

The theme of the Walking Dead is actually a question, that the rest of the show is the answer to. If you read the comics, you know the comics start with Rick waking up in the hospital, but in the show, we start with Rick and Shane in a car eating and talking about the difference between men and women. There is a reason The Walking Dead tv show added in the difference between men and women scene in the pilot episode. A comic book does not have to a theme stated, a narrative story, aka a movie or dramatic tv show has to have something pushing the story along episode to episode or from scene to scene in a movie and needs to have a common thread that viewers can know the show is about. When they created the tv show, they had to look at the comic book and find a theme to push for the tv show. So without me teasing you any longer let’s talk about the theme. The Walking Dead’s theme is a question, that the show will answer through its seasons, technically said by Lori to Rick, which Rick tells us the audience by having Rick tell Shane. The pilot’s question is Does Rick love his family? They set up the fact that Rick is bad at expressing his feelings, something he still faces today. How many times have you heard Rick say I love you to any character, Lori, Carl, Michonne, Judith? Since Rick can’t or doesn’t express his emotions through words, we are seeing him do it through actions. So does Rick actually love his family? The answer we see in episode 1, is yes, because he attempts to find his family, then theme is raised for the rest of the show once we understand Rick does care about his family to How far is Rick willingly to go to protect his family that he loves.
